TRAVEL IN EUROPE - POLAND

The Republic of Poland is located in central Europe. It borders on Germany in the west, the Czech and Slovak Republics in the south, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine in the east, while its northern border is delimited by the Baltic Sea coast and Russia (Kaliningrad district).

Warsaw is Poland's capital and the largest city. It has a population of over 1,800,000 and is located upon the longest Polish River, the Vistula. The major Polish cities include Cracow (Kraków), Gdansk, Lódz, Katowice, Poznan, Szczecin and Wroclaw.

Poland is a country with diversified landscape. The Sudeten (Sudety) and the Carpathian ( Karpa-ty) Mountains stretch along Poland's southern border. The Sudeten belong to the oldest massifs in Europe. Mt Sniezka (1602 meters) is their tallest peak. The Carpathian are younger. The Tatras, which make up their central part, are the only Alpine-style range of Poland; their tallest peak, Mt. Rysy is 2499 meters high.

Poland has a temperate climate. The average temperature in July is 19°C. There are, of course, very hot days when the temperature exceeds 30°C. The coldest winter months are January and February, with average temperature a few degrees below zero. With huge snows falls, the Polish Mountains offer good conditions for winter sport enthusiasts in January, February and March.
